Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert CCIE DefinitionStudying for the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) qualification is an option to consider once you have a significant amount of experience in the field. It is a fairly exclusive certification and is considered extremely difficult to obtain.

Written Exam

The written portion of the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) exam must be taken at an authorized Pearson training center. It is a closed-book, 90-question exam that lasts two hours and costs $350. The tests can cover virtually any topic in the Cisco Press, and no amount of studying will be able to replace years of experience.

Practical Exam

Even more difficult than the written exam, the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) lab exam is a full 8-hour session in one of Cisco’s mobile CCIE labs. Six hours of the exam are spent doing configurations and 2 hours are spent troubleshooting extremely complex problems. The lab exam costs $1,500, so be sure you are ready before you set an appointment.

Professional Benefits

Becoming a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) is a major accomplishment, and not one that most people will ever achieve. If you are able to pass both tests you should expect to be highly compensated and put in charge of demanding projects in the future.
