Starting a Computer Consulting Business? Get Your Admin in Order
When you are starting a computer consulting business, your priority is likely to be selling your services to clients and establishing an income. While this makes perfect sense, it is equally important to get your internal admin processes in order.
There is no better time to do this than in the early days of starting a computer consulting business. You are likely to have more spare time than you ever will again, away from client work.
In addition, the longer you run your company with disorganized administration, the harder it becomes to unravel further down the line.
With this in mind, ensure that, as a minimum, you have very organized systems in place for the following items:
Call Logging
There are many different ways to log the calls you deal with on each of your client’s systems.
Call logging can range from Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Access databases, to dedicated call logging systems and Microsoft SharePoint-integrated portals.
Spend some time researching the options and implement a system that helps you keep track of work and produces professional call reports for your clients.
Time Tracking
Whether you charge hourly, daily, or down to the minute, you need to decide how you will track this time.
Time trackers that sync with smartphones help you to log time when away from your base.
Experiment with the systems available when starting a computer consulting business to be prepared for the time when everything gets busy.
Invoicing
Manually producing invoices in Microsoft Word may make perfect sense when you are only issuing three each month, but you don’t want to be doing this when three becomes thirty.
Whether you use an accounting package like Intuit QuickBooks, or a dedicated invoicing application, it is best to use something scalable from the start.
Your invoices will look more professional. And you will be able to track money owed and produce useful reports. Even better, you may be able to use an invoicing package that links with your time tracking software.
