Technology Sales Jobs and the 5 Skills that Can Make/Break Your Career

Never thought you would find yourself in technology sales jobs and feel a bit out of your depth?

Not to worry. Many people are faced with exactly the same issue when they first take on a sales role. This is even more likely when they are running their own business for the first time.

To help you make sure that your IT sales strategies run as smoothly as possible, here are five skills that you need to work on to be successful:

  1. Work on yourself – Learn about yourself to form your personal brand. You need to know who you are and what you value. It’s important to have this sense of self, so that you present a confident personality that instills a sense of trust and authority in others.

  2. Work on your people skills – Learn to communicate effectively with everyone you encounter. You’ll need to engage with people by listening to them and by asking questions.

  3. Work on your people skills some more – Learn to have a positive attitude at all times. Enthusiasm is infectious. You need to champion your product or service positively without being negative towards your competitors.

  4. Work on your people skills even more – Learn to build relationships with your peers, your local business community, your marketplace, and potential customers.

  5. Work on the most important people skill of all - Learn to empathize with your target market and its pain points. To be able to do this, you need to know your target market inside out.

To easily put this learning into action, start to network with people and review how you did after the event.

And a little “people watching” may help, too: You will inevitably interact with others who have technology sales jobs as part of their daily routine. Watch how they approach their interactions with you and others, learning from their mistakes and successes.
