Is Houston Colocation the Best Choice for Texas IT Companies?

Is Houston Colocation the Best Choice for Texas IT Companies?Being the 4th largest city in the U.S., Houston is home to many large and ever-growing businesses. With a robust economy and historically strong fiber connections, it is a natural fit that Houston is home to 24 of the Fortune 500 companies.

The question is: does your colocation center need to be in close proximity to your office? Many companies say yes and want to be near their data center; these people are affectionately referred to as server huggers

Huggers like the idea of being able to go to the data center location when necessary and perform maintenance of their networks. Having quite a few top ranked tier 2, tier 3, and tier 4 data center colocation facilities in the Houston area makes these server huggers extremely happy.

What Are People Looking for in a Data Center

When deciding on a Houston colocation data center, there are several important issues customers will inquire about and ponder:

  • What kind of power and telecommunications redundancy does the data center have?
  • How easy is it for a business to start small, say one rack, and grow into a private cage?
  • What kind of network security does the data center offer?
  • What kind of physical security does the data center offer?
  • Which tier is the data center?
  • What really are the client’s needs?

Running a colocation facility is about understanding the client’s business and needs, perhaps better than they understand. Running an energy efficient data center that offers solutions for their business by offing high security, and strong customer service, all with never going down… that is the goal of most every data center.

Houston Colocation Data Centers

Houston underwent a data center growth spurt a few years back. This means clients looking for a local colocation center have not only a wide array to choose from, but also benefit from the competition among these facilities.

Data centers also benefit from this friendly competition in that technology will make larger advances when you must fight for customers.

Clients can choose from smaller and more personal data centers such as Windstream who offers full and half cabinets to their clients, to extremely large data centers such as CyrusOne, which has a 100,000 square foot facility (about the size of an entire city block).

Another benefit to already having all these data centers in the Houston area is that the power sources have already been put into place. Each data center uses an extremely high amount of energy, and the power companies have built new stations to accommodate them. This benefits the data center customers in that the risk of downtime due to power outages has been greatly reduced, while benefiting the data centers by having easier access to these power sources.
