As the world we live in becomes even more digitally transformed, through mainstream adoption of search, social media, mobile computing, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things, and machine learning, data centers -- especially hyperscale data centers -- take center stage. With over two billion people on the planet using Facebook and smaller subsets of that group active on a handful of other social media properties, digital is here to stay.
However unless you work in and around IT, chances are you haven’t given much thought to what goes on behind the scenes when you ask Google, Siri, or Alexa a question. Or post something on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. In fact, try asking a friend or family member outside of the IT industry if he or she knows what a data center is. In most cases, you’ll get back a blank stare.
However, the data center industry has most certainly caught the attention of the financial services industry over the past decade or so. Many data center stocks, mostly data center REITs (real estate investment trusts), are now the darlings of Wall Street -- or at least get quite a bit of attention everywhere from CNBC to Seeking Alpha, to the Motley Fool.
How Digitally-Savvy and Capital-Savvy Are Miami Data Center Operators?
When doing the research for the Greater Miami Data Center Market Opportunity Report, we looked at 21 colocation and wholesale data center operators in the South Florida marketplace and compared the companies across 44 metrics -- to figure out which are the most digitally-savvy.
However, building and scaling facilities in the data center business is incredibly capital intensive. So regardless of whether it’s venture-backed or publicly-traded, nearly all CEOs of data center facilities need to get good at raising capital.
For example, the Equinix NAP of the Americas building 50 NE 9th Street is about 750,000 square feet. And according to the Miami-Dade Property Appraiser, the property has an assessed value of $59,125,000 (empty!).
