When you started your IT solutions company, you no doubt had expertise and plenty of contacts in the industry. That can be a great start, but you’ve probably already seen how business can wax and wane.

There, you can see Scott Steinberg’s article, "5 Tips to Build a Killer Consulting Business," which has plenty of advice applicable to an IT solutions company. The best advice is probably to be flexible. Consider these tips from Steinberg, a high-tech analyst and author of The Business Expert’s Guidebook:

• Cultivate a network – Find contractors from related industries to partner with. They can help you land broader contracts if they enhance your area of expertise. You can also help each other bring in new clients.

• Exploit knowledge gaps – Companies will have in-house staff to do what you used to do; target the outside expertise they will likely be seeking. Develop expertise, if you need to, with less familiar products or programs.

These flexibility tips may guide your IT solutions company to the more sustainable business you seek.
